Kyrgyzstan plans to send Belarus another request for extradition of dictator Bakiyev, who had fled to Belarus.
“I have ordered the Prosecutor General to forward another request to Belarus for extradtion of Bakiyev to Kyrgyzstan,” Azimbek Beknazarov, Kyrgyzstan’s deputy prime minister of the interim government supervising the judicial system and law enforcement authorities, said at a press conference on Wednesday, Interfax reports.
He thinks that Belarus refused to extradite Bakiyev because Kyrgyz government was not legitimate. “We have held referendum, Roza Otunbayeva is a legitimate president, the governmental bodies and prosecutor’s agencies are also legitimate, so we can forward another request,” Beknazarov explained.
“We have information that Kurmanbek Bakiyev’s younger brother Zhanybek is also in Belarus,” he said. “I ordered to find out through Interpol and Belarus’s official authorities who stays in the country with Bakiyev, only his family members, or his brothers, too,” Beknazarov said.
To a question about extradition of former president’s younger son Maksim Bakiyev from the UK Beknazarov said: “Kyrgyzstan doesn’t have a necessary agreement with the UK, so we will seek for Maksim Bakiyev’s extradition through Interpol.”
