EU begins competing with Belarus in Russian powdered milk market

In spite of close distance and absence of customs duties Belarusian products do not cost less than European and New Zealand ones.
European countries begin to replace Belarus in supplying dairy products, first of all powdered milk, to Russia, executive director of Russian Dairy Union Vladimir Labinov said on July 22.
“Belarus has been the major supplier of powdered milk to Russia for the last few years. This year, European counties demonstrate a continuous growth of their share in powdered milk import. Even if Belarus increased production volumes, it would fail to satisfy Russia’s current demands,” RIA Novosti news agency quotes Labinov.
He noted Belarusian dairy products, in particular milk powder products, were more expensive than similar products from Europe and even New Zealand. “Belarus has an advantage, it doesn’t pay customs duties. But even this doesn’t make Belarusian products cheaper,” Labinov stressed.
Andrei Danilenko, the chairman of the board of the National Milk Producers (Soyuzmoloko) emphasized that Belarusian dairy products were of high quality. He also added: “though we want to have a stable price policy, Belarus intentionally restricted the dairy products volume of deliveries to Russia this summer.”
According to Danilenka, “Belarus is able to increase volumes of supplies to Russia significantly.” He also added that Belarus continued to be biggest and principal dairy products supplier to the Russian market.
